If you happen to be traveling on I-64 in West Virginia between Charleston and Beckley, I recommend a detour to see the New River Gorge Bridge located in Victor. After leaving Beckley, it’s a short 25 min drive north on Highway 19 and well worth the trip.
After passing through Fayetteville, we crossed over the New River and turned into the Canyon Rim Visitor Center on the right. It’s free, offered restrooms, and was pet-friendly too. (Which was perfect since this was taken last summer on our relocation trip so Stella was with us) There were picnic tables and some grassy spaces around the Visitor Center too. While we were there, one family was laying out snacks at a table while another couple was on a blanket on the ground, comparing photos. It was a gorgeous day. And it was positively peaceful.
The lookout point where we took these pictures was a short walk from the parking lot. There was another lookout point, lower in the canyon. Folks said the lower view was just as beautiful and provided a great view of the arch. But it required walking down 277 stairs and we were exhausted by another long day of driving. (I confess, I just wanted to get to the hotel for the night).
Furthermore, I heard there’s a great view from the west side of the canyon. We didn’t get over there to it but that just gives me excuse to have to come back!
Things to remember for next time…
1. It’s free. There are no fees to enter. The visitor center was modern and the restrooms were clean.
2. Sunset is an ideal time for visiting. There tends to be less people so you’ll have more time to find the best angle for a photo or maybe just linger and contemplate the gorgeousness of your surroundings.
