Off I-81 in western Virginia is the cute little town of Buchanan. It has a swinging bridge…
Yep, that’s right. It swings and it’s awesome.
It’s just north of Roanoke (so perfect for a quick day trip), but it’s also a short drive south of The Natural Bridge. So, if you’re visiting there, then I recommend squeezing an extra hour into your itinerary to drive over Buchanan to see it.
It was raining cats and dogs on this day and, since it’s only February, the scenery was a little blah.
But the bridge! It’s really, really, cool. The first section of the bridge seemed like it just moved up and down a bit. But when you get past the middle pier in the river, that’s when it really starts to sway side to side.
Interesting factoid: that river is the James River. Yup, the same James River that flows through Richmond, way over in the eastern part of the state. It’s that long. That too is cool.
And look at this town – it’s adorable.
What a wonderful and happy little sidetrip on our journey.
