Yesterday was such a dreary day. It rained endlessly. I couldn’t get out and walk Stella since she detests getting wet. (Although I went and gave her a bath in the afternoon so she got wet anyways). I needed something to do and so it seemed the perfect time to make snacks for the car for next week’s road trip.
Our destination is Maryville, Tennessee, but we plan on getting off the road for a few side trips along the way. I’m so excited – we’ll be going through the Blue Ridge Mountains and I’ve heard it’s beautiful.
I’m a sucker for snack mixes simply because I can never choose between pretzels or peanuts or bagel chips or crackers. So my default in the grocery store snack aisle always ends up being a bag of pre-made snack mix.
But yesterday’s doldrums called for an activity more than going to the store. I remember my mom baking a homemade Chex mix when we were younger so I dug into my recipes and found her original one. I also remember it needing some extra kick in flavor so I got a little heavy-handed on the Worcestershire sauce. Btw, does anyone know how to say that correctly? I can’t. I try but it always comes out wersh-ta-sure-shire sauce. Somehow I don’t think I’m even close. Oh well, at least I know it adds a little more zing!
I made one other change – I added Rice Krispies to the standard Chex cereal, peanuts, and pretzels. Ya know, as I was adding them, it crossed my mind on why aren’t they ever included. Yeaahhhh. I found out why. They totally soak up the melted butter/seasoning salt/garlic powder mixture instantaneously and proceed to burn into little chewy pebbles of nothingness. Do. Not. Add. Rice. Krispies. I spent 30 mins plucking those little things out of the mix at the end.
I’m the first to admit I’m not a good cook but I think it worked out pretty decently, if I do say so myself. 😉 The snack mix is all bagged up, I’m one more step closer to hitting the open road again, and I can’t wait to see what cool places we come across. Woohoo!
